Ever seen autumn in Raleigh, North Carolina? For thirty years, the only thing I knew about Raleigh, NC–capital city of the state. I can still, 20 years later, hear my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. White shout out, “RALEIGH!” when I quizzed her on state capitals (I used to know all 50 by heart…but…) But, at no point in my life did I ever think to visit Raleigh.

I don’t mean to insult the city. Even when I started traveling, Raleigh didn’t cross my mind. Honestly, I rarely thought of North Carolina. Which, looking back, is my HUGE mistake. North Carolina comes alive in the fall. Literally, leaves bend to her will, merging into earth toned jewels the moment she says, “change.”

Until then, everything remains Spring.

And anything South of North Carolina? Ha, nothing is changing colors until after North Carolina has pranced and whipped her colorful hair in all her glory. Then South Carolina, Georgia follows suit. I know because I drove to Raleigh and watched as trees bloomed autumn before my eyes. (and, as always, upset that I couldn’t take photos because I didn’t want to crash while driving)

Instead of listing all the places I walked through, all the leaves I crunched beneath my feet, I decided I’d take you on a photo tour of this radiant city. For navigation sake, I start with Downtown Raleigh and move into Warehouse District (which I adored!). Next, I head north to North Hills (ideal residence if I ever move) and end in Durham–because you can’t go to North Carolina without seeing Duke!

Growing up, I thought all colleges looked like THIS.

Hope you enjoyed my journey through Raleigh! I only had a weekend so there is so much I missed. Have you ever been? What did you love most?

  1. I’ve realised that I do more traveling in the Autumn/winter months than I do in summer. That’s weird isn’t it? There’s just more holiday weekends that I can leverage to get extra time off. I can’t wait to visit North Carolina in Autumn 🙂
